When the Universe grants your wishes

As you may recall, I did a post a couple of weeks ago talking about how important it is to take breaks, and how terrible I am at it. I ended the post vowing to try to take breaks during the day. I went another week and did not make any progress.

So you know what the Universe did?

Last Wednesday morning, I was running on a stony/sandy beach I often run on, stepped down wrong, heard a crack, and took a tumble. As I lay in the wet sand trying to take in what happened, I heard this message: “You needed a break and here it is. Enjoy some quiet time.”

Unfortunately, I was on a remote end of the beach with no phone on me. I figured I had about 15 minutes while my body was in shock before the pain and swelling set in, so I walked home at the fastest pace I could go. Close to my house, I saw someone I knew who might have a phone but didn’t want to risk stopping if she didn’t. I got home about 25 minutes after the fall, collapsed on the sofa, told my husband about hearing the crack and taking a spill…

Then I asked him for the phone and called work to tell them I’d be a few minutes late because I’d had to walk home versus running.

I got off the phone and my husband stared at me.

“You’re going to be late? Would you like to call them back and tell them you won’t be in today because you’re going to the emergency room to get an xray for what is, no doubt, a broken ankle?”

Oh, I thought. I guess I’m on a different path than I thought I was on. See how breaks give you insight? 🙂

Bottom line: The fibula bone that runs down the outside of my calf and keeps my ankle working is cracked straight through about 1/2″ from the bottom of the bone. Yes, this is what happens to stubborn people – we have to be popped to get off a path! I have to be horizontal for a week to help get the swelling down, and then we’ll see what happens from there.

My morning meditation is still one of deep gratitude.

  • That my general health is good.
  • That I have kind friends and family to help.
  • That I am inventive and can figure out ways to work in bed, and move around the house resting my knee on a wheeled office chair (I am not digging the crutches!)
  • That I’m not in too much pain.
  • That I can sleep.
  • That the weather is finally cool again.
  • That I have a view from our first floor bedroom out a large window to our front garden.
  • That I have two cats to keep me company.
  • That people at work and in the theater are covering for me.
  • And that I have a week to work on quiet tasks, to read, and to ponder.

When you ask the Universe for help, you have to accept what comes next even in its weirdest forms.

I sincerely hope all is well with you!

I’ll leave you with a shot I took a couple of weekends ago of Bill standing in a hallway of a house built in the 1700s down in York, Maine. Cool way to create a magic space.

  1. You need to be more specific about the word break. I ponder every morning when I wake up. It helps me sort things out and remember my brother and how much I miss him.

    Don’t overdo.
