5 steps out of a rut

Feeling in a low energy rut? Here are a few ideas to spur your juices and lift your energy.

Think Creatively
Instead of saying I’m not creative, how about saying “I can be creative.” Even if you don’t feel artistic, you can always come up with a creative solution. It might be a puzzle you solve, a class you take, or a unique solution you find to a problem. If you need a push, take a trip or meet a new person. Or look at an issue you deal with every day and come up with a creative way to make your world a little better. What’s one baby step you can take?

Become a Sponge
Whatever you’re reading, seeing, or working on, become a sponge for new information. Nothing spurs on creativity like having new information to chew on. What can you explore this week that will get you thinking differently?

Change Your Perspective
If you want to think differently, behave differently. Change the layout of the rooms in your house. Eat outside. Get a haircut. Find a new way to get to work. Go to a restaurant in a different part of town. Buy something new each time you grocery shop. Wear a new color. Get new socks. What can you do this week that will help you see something from someone else’s point of view?

Make Something
Get watercolor or acrylic paint and paper and paint something. Buy a chunk of clay and make a small animal. Sketch the view from your office window. Hand-stitch a beanbag or cat toy. Make a log cabin out of popsicle sticks. Paint your favorite saying on a rock. Write a song. Cook a new dish. You don’t have to spend a lot on art supplies to make one small thing. Making things helps your brain think in 3-D. Whatever you make doesn’t have to be perfect. It just needs to be an expression of you.

Have a Great Conversation
A sure way to have a great conversation is to ask questions, and then listen to the answers. Ask someone close to you to tell you a story you haven’t heard before. Talk to your grocery store clerk. What do they do for fun? Talk to a stranger on the bus or subway. See what ideas are floating around you this week that want to come your way.

October is here and there is a definite nip in the air. Maybe that alone will give you a jolt of energy!

Peace and love from the rocky coast of Maine. This is a display in front of one of our favorite local restaurants, The Good Table. The food inside is just as joyous and abundant. 🙂

  1. New socks!!! I love it. And you’re right about so much of this. I was feeling SO draggy, but HAD TO cook for the SERVANT OF TWO MASTERS (great show, BTW) cast party. Made 5# of meat balls and 2 large economy-sized zucchinis’ worth of zucchini casserole, plus a custard sauce for a TRIFLE (it was a thing from the show… well, in fact, they sorta all were). Hadn’t cooked in quantity for a while now, and the feeling of “Cool! I got this!” was such a boost.
Gorgeous photo of The Good Table’s decorations, too! We need to do lunch again soon.
