Keep things moving

My favorite advice from the list of 100 declutter ideas in the book One Thing at a Time by Cindy Glovinsky was to keep things moving. This can be applied to your house, to your work space, and to how you live your life.

At home, keep your clothes moving:

  • Off the floor and into the laundry bin.
  • Into the washer.
  • Washer to dryer.
  • Dryer to folded or hung.
  • Folded or hung to put away.
  • As you pull clothes out to wear them, give away or toss clothes that don’t fit, that you don’t like, or that are worn out. If something needs to be fixed, fix it or toss it. Don’t put it away to decide another time!

At home or work, keep the dishes moving:

  • Dirty into the sink.
  • In the sink: wash.
  • Once washed, dry and put away.
  • Everything has its place. The counter and the sink do not count as “a place.” 🙂

At home or work, keep the mail moving:

  • Sort delivered mail into two piles – mail that needs action, and mail to toss.
  • Toss the tossable mail right then.
  • Move the action mail to a stack for the appropriate person or to wherever the needed action will take place – a bill basket, in front of your computer to e-pay, or to your “to do” folder. If mail goes in your to-do folder, make sure you have some action for it in your planner.
  • When you take the action, toss the papers.

At home or at work, look around and see where things tend to pool up and release the dams! Keeping your space clear and flowing helps keep the air and attitude around you clear and flowing.
